Temple of Literature

Did you know Vietnam’s first university is right in the heart of Hanoi? The Temple of Literature holds almost a thousand years of devotion to learning.

  • Time needed: 1–1.5 hours
  • Best time: Morning
  • Hours & tickets: Check before you go

Step through the gate and you enter a world far from the noisy streets outside. Shady old trees, the still Well of Heavenly Clarity and the Constellation of Literature Pavilion reflected in the water create a scene that is solemn yet peaceful. On both sides of the well stand rows of doctoral stelae on stone turtles, honouring scholars who passed the royal exams over many centuries.

Here you will understand why Vietnamese people have always valued learning. In exam season, students come to pray for luck; at Tet, families come to ask a calligrapher for a lucky word. The Temple of Literature is for anyone who wants to touch the cultural depth of thousand-year-old Hanoi.

Getting there

About 10 minutes by taxi or private car from the Old Quarter.

Tips

Arrive early to avoid tour groups and the midday sun. Please don’t touch the doctoral stelae, so this heritage can be preserved.
